  • How to Stop Biting Nails
    By Health Blog on May 2, 2011 | 1 Comment1 Comment Comments

Biting nails is a compulsive habit that is usually done by kids and teenagers, with adults also sometimes having the compulsion. Onychophagia is the technical term used to describe the biting of fingernails but you probably won’t hear anyone other than a doctor using the term.

What are the Symptoms of Biting Your Nails?
While the symptoms in most cases are generally mild, socially nail biting is looked down upon and then there’s the aesthetics of the nails themselves which can look less than appealing in more extreme cases of nail biters. Various cuticle problems causing issues like whitlow, felon or paronychia which are bacterial or fungal infections can arise. Bacteria is also more easily transmitted to the mouth which can create a variety of problems.

    How to Stop Biting Nails
Treatments for nail biters are behavioral in nature and can include nail polishes which discourage biting your fingernails, making the act displeasurable. Mouthpieces have also been used to stop biting nails.

For more severe cases where simple treatments fail to work there is behavioral therapy. A therapist can help in replacing the bad habit of chewing your nails with a more constructive and desirable habit. Most teens generally grow out of the habit though, so it is rarely ever a long term condition.

  • Symptoms of Tinnitus
    By Health Blog on December 1, 2010 | 2 Comments2 Comments Comments

While most people hear no sound when everything is quiet around them, some people continue to hear sounds even when it is completely silent. If you continue to hear a noise in your ear when everything is quiet you may be suffering from the symptoms of tinnitus. Symptoms for tinnitus range from a humming, whistling, buzzing or ringing sound.

    Symptoms of Tinnitus

There are two common types of tinnitus; the pulsatile and tonal tinnitus symptoms. You will know if you have pulsatile tinnitus if the sounds you hear are continuous and seem congruent with your heartbeat. If you’re just hearing constant ringing in your ears, then most probably you have tonal tinnitus. Another less common type of symptom for tinnitus is where you hear beeps in your ears, as if Morse code was being delivered to you.

You can make these symptoms for tinnitus go away especially if they are mild, tolerable ones. If stress and fatigue are the etiology, then enough rest and sleep and deep breathing exercises should be the answer. A natural herb called Gingko biloba has shown to do therapeutic wonders as well. By putting them in your ears for about six weeks, more blood will flow in your ears by way of its vasodilating effect thus reducing the symptoms.

Cutting out alcohol, cigarette smoking, sugary and fatty foods in your diet will also help reduce the symptoms for tinnitus as these only constrict the blood flow going to the ears, depriving them of the oxygen from the blood it should be receiving. That is why in relation to that, exercise is also recommended as part of the treatment of tinnitus, along with the intake Vitamins A, B and E and Zinc that will help improve your hearing.
